Provide Background Details and Rationale: As research has continued in the development of how ELs learn best, the Park Hill ELD Program has also adapted its program to include best practices and to always meet state and national standards.

Initially, the program focused on Thematic teaching, with an emphasis on vocabulary. The program then moved toward literacy driven instruction, using reading and writing to teach English language development. Finally, the program has moved to teaching English language development through grade level content.

This final approach is reflected in the updated Park Hill English Language Domains (ELDs). The ELDs refer to the focus on the teaching language through grade level content, using grade level priority standards and the four language modalities of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

Each ELD is outlined in a grid format. The focal point of the lesson is the grade level content priority standard. Each ELD grid also includes target Content and Academic vocabulary. The grid then delineates the language expectations for students at each level of proficiency and each language modality--Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. These language expectations are based on the WIDA Can-Do Descriptors.

This approach allows the ELD teacher and the content teacher to better collaborate and co-teach because they are both focusing on the same grade level content priority standards. In addition, the ELDs give both teachers an understanding of where the student can perform linguistically within the standard, as well as provide the target goal for where the student can go. These updated ELDs and the ELD grid will improve the consistency across the Elementary ELD Department, as well as provide consistent support for ELs district wide.
