Provide Background Details and Rationale: Technology staff was notified by KCMO that MODOT that they will soon be replacing the bridge on I-29 that goes over Waukomis Road. The district's fiber loop runs along Waukomis road and underneath the bridge that is being replaced. MODOT will be installing 12 foot piers to support the new bridge and those new piers will be placed exactly where the district's fiber is currently located. The work on the new bridge could begin as early as March 1, 2022. MODOT will close one side of the bridge and divert all traffic to the other side, then reverse to complete the project.

The bridge replacement will require the district to move its fiber optic network line so that it is no longer underneath the new piers. In addition, the district is required to lower the depth of the fiber from the existing 3 foot depth to a 12 foot depth. This work needs to be done before MODOT starts their demolition process, which may begin as early as March, 2022.

During the initial assessment to determine the scope of work involved in moving the fiber line, contractors discovered solid rock in the area where the line will be moved. Specialized tools and processes are required to bore through the rock.

The cost for this project is not to exceed $125,000. In order to begin the work as soon as possible, the Superintendent waived the requirement for competitive bids or proposals by determining that the work protected the district against a serious disruption in services.

The Superintendent has authorized Capital Electric to complete the work.
